Data privacy and protection across continents
In South Africa we have the #Protection of Personal Protection Information Act, 2013 also known as the #POPIA. As a country, we are currently in the transition and implementation stage. The transitional provisions contained in section 114 of the Act, in effect state that all processing of personal information must within one year from 1 July 2020 conform to the Act. Hence, all entities that process personal data, have to be compliant as from 1 July 2021. Thereafter, penalties come into effect.

About Suvi Julin
Suvi Julin is a technology oriented lawyer from Finland. She is a partner at Berggren Oy, a Finnish law firm focusing on intellectual property and technology law. Suvi focuses her practice to data protection and privacy as well as intellectual property law and commercial contracts and often speaks and lectures on the topics as well. Before joining Berggren in 2012, Suvi worked over 10 years in ICT industry in various roles and has therefore obtained a strong combination of both technical and legal knowledge and experience. She is especially interested in developing data protection and privacy management strategies and practices.
Suvi holds a Master of Laws degree from University of Lapland and a Master of Science degree in Information Processing Science from University of Oulu. She is a licensed legal counsel (qualified to represent before all courts in Finland), an authorized Finnish Patent and Trademark Attorney and a registered European Trademark and Design Attorney.
